Sporting could celebrate the title at a rival's home for the first time

If Benfica lose on Saturday against Sporting de Braga, Sporting will have an unprecedented opportunity on Sunday to celebrate a title in a rival's stadium, if they beat FC Porto, on the 31st round of the I Football League.

At Estádio José Alvalade, the 'lions' have already witnessed Benfica's celebrations in 1975 and, two decades later, FC Porto's in 1995 and 1999, now having the chance to 'get revenge' on one of their biggest rivals in Portuguese football, even though the 'blue and whites' are already out of the title race this season.

The 'setbacks' at rivals' home started in 1974/75, when, in the penultimate round, Benfica arrived at Alvalade needing only a draw to win the race against FC Porto in the fight for the title, something they would achieve by imposing a 1-1 draw: Fraguito scored at 30 minutes and Diamantino responded for the 'reds' at 52.

Two decades passed and the hegemony of the 'dragons' after the 25th of April resulted in two celebrations at Alvalade, in the seasons that began and ended their 'penta', the only one in Portugal to date, between 1994 and 1999.

First, on the 31st matchday, under the baton of English coach Bobby Robson, who had been fired from Alvalade in the middle of the previous season, Domingos, at 58 minutes, decided on a penalty in the 1-0 triumph precisely at the venue of his direct competitor to win the championship, which the 'dragons' concluded with a seven-point advantage, in the last season in which each victory was worth two points.

In 1999, FC Porto had already climbed to the champion's pitch, since Boavista, with whom they were fighting for first place, had drawn and thus offered the title on the 'sofa': Zahovic drew at 85 minutes, after Pedro Barbosa's opening goal at 46, on the 33rd matchday of a competition in which the 'black and whites' were in second place, eight points behind the 'blue and whites', while Sporting was fourth, 16 points behind the champion.

At the turn of the millennium, once again FC Porto celebrated at their opponent's home, now at their biggest rival's, Benfica, in 2011 and in 2022, in both cases in a party sealed with triumphs at Estádio da Luz.

In the first case, André Villas-Boas, now a candidate for the presidency of FC Porto, in Saturday's electoral act, was the Porto coach who faced Benfica, of Jorge Jesus, whom he defeated by 2-1, in the challenge that became famous for turning off the lights and turning on the irrigation system in the middle of the festivities of the formation of Invicta.

Colombian Guarín opened the scoring at nine minutes, Argentinian Saviola drew at 17, from a penalty, the same way Brazilian Hulk gave the command back, definitively, to the dragons, champions with a 21-point lead (84-63) over the 'reds'.

More recently, in the 2021/22 season, the match of the 33rd and penultimate round was decided in stoppage time, at 90+4 minutes, in a counterattack finished by an unlikely hero, Nigerian full-back Zaidu (1-0). FC Porto, of Sérgio Conceição, was champion with 91 points, six more than Sporting, second, while Benfica would close the podium, with 74.

Now, with 12 points still in dispute, Sporting leads with 80, seven more than Benfica. If Sporting de Braga defeats the 'eagles' at Luz, Rúben Amorim's team will only depend on itself to start celebrating its 20th title the next day, at Estádio do Dragão, having to defeat the rival Porto.

Sporting de Braga would even see this celebration with good eyes, a sign that they would have won at Luz and that the 'lions' would have beaten the 'dragons', at a time when the Minho team is tied with FC Porto and both are fighting for the third place in the I Liga, both already 18 points behind Sporting.

The team from Alvalade travels to Porto with the tranquility of a comfortable lead and the motivation of eight consecutive triumphs, against FC Porto with the worst record in the Sérgio Conceição era.
