Wes Brown was once tipped as one of English football's brightest prospects, so much so that Manchester United handed him a contract worth a reported £50,000-a-week (€58.4k).

However, the former England international failed to live up to his billing and in February was declared bankrupt. Speaking to the 'Ben Heath Podcast' on Tuesday, the 44-year-old has opened up on what went wrong.

"I think when you come into a lot of money, you need the right people around you, don't you? And I'd say that was one thing I didn't have. It was a bit different. I didn't have many people I could talk to," he said.

"It's a long story and I don't want to go into too much detail, but it was just things that happened over a period of time, with certain investments and things I got involved in when I was younger that a lot of people get involved in without really knowing what they're doing," he continued.

"That's what a lot of people are doing until it gets to this stage. That's how it unravelled. It happened and I'm dealing with it, but it's one of those things that you hope people, especially the younger generation, don't get involved in," he added.
