Danish cyclist Jonas Vingegaard underwent a successful operation on his collarbone after his crash at the Tour of the Basque Country, his team Jumbo-Visma announced on Tuesday, without giving a recovery time.

"Jonas [Vingegaard] has successfully been operated on his collarbone. He will spend the coming weeks recovering. It is not yet certain how long the recovery will take", the team wrote on social media.

Vingegaard crashed on Thursday during stage four of the Tour of the Basque Country, along with more than a dozen other riders, around 30 kilometers from the finish, and was put in the recovery position by roadside medics before being taken away on a stretcher with an oxygen mask and a neck brace.

As well as breaking his collarbone and ribs, the winner of the last two Tours de France suffered a pulmonary contusion and a pneumothorax.

Visma-Lease a Bike said Vingegaard is "doing well" and thanked people for the messages of support he has received.

The crash happened on a descent and involved more than a dozen riders, with the race organizers neutralizing the stage as multiple ambulances attended to the fallen riders.

Primoz Roglic (BORA-hansgrohe), who had been leading the race, Remco Evenepoel (Soudal Quick-Step), and Jay Vine (UAE Emirates) were also caught up in the crash.
