CAF wants the rehabilitation of the São Tomé Stadium for international games

The president of the Confederation of African Football (CAF) today called for the rehabilitation of the National Stadium 12 de Julho, in São Tomé, which has been closed since 2021, so that the archipelago's national team can once again host international matches.

"This country has a lot of talent in terms of football players and my main goal is for the São Tomé national team to be able to play its games in São Tomé again and ensure that the stadium can meet the requirements of FIFA and CAF, making it possible for the population to feel the excitement of going to the stadium and supporting the national team", said Patrice Motsepe.

The 12th of July National Stadium was banned by CAF itself due to its high level of degradation.

Last year, the São Tomé government granted the concession of the infrastructure for the management of the São Tomé Football Federation (FSF), which became responsible for the rehabilitation works, but, to date, the works have not started.

Patrice Motsepe stressed the need for a partnership between the Government and the Federation for the promotion of football in the archipelago and encouraged "the private sector to join in and finance football in São Tomé and Príncipe".

"Without money we cannot materialise many things", stressed the CAF president, who considered that many countries in Africa, such as São Tomé and Príncipe, "do not have sufficient financial resources to take the country to the necessary level" in terms of football.

Asked whether CAF would provide any direct support for the reconstruction of the 12th of July National Stadium, Patrice Motsepe argued that it is necessary to "use the limited resources" made available by the organisation and FIFA "to build infrastructure", with "the Stadium being the number one infrastructure".

The CAF president was in São Tomé for a 24-hour visit and held separate meetings with the President of the Republic, Carlos Vila Nova, the Minister of Youth and Sports, Eurídice Medeiros, and the leaders of the São Tomé Football Federation.

According to him, his visit aimed to "support the great work" that has been done by the president of the FSF, Domingos Monteiro, "for the development of football in this wonderful country".

"I am very proud of the work that the president of the Federation has been doing", said the CAF president.
