Van der Poel, who had won the 'Hell of the North' in 2023 for the first time, today racing in good weather, covered the 259.7 kilometers between Compiègne and Roubaix in a time of 05:25.58 hours, leaving the competition far behind. The current world champion attacked hard about 60 kilometers from the finish in one of the many 'pavé' (cobblestone) zones, when he was still following a large group of cyclists, and gradually, alone, increased his advantage over the pursuers, pedaling towards the finish line of what is the most emblematic of all the classics, with a record average speed in the race. Further back, the group of pursuers 'broke up' as the kilometers passed, with Jasper Philipsen, Van der Poel's teammate and winner this year in Milan-Sanremo, trying to isolate himself in second place in the last ten kilometers, facing the attempted response from Mads Pedersen (Lidl-Trek) and Nils Politt (UAE Emirates), with Stefan Küng (Groupama-FDJ) taking off. The three arrived at the velodrome together, but Philipsen was the fastest in the sprint and repeated the second place he had won in 2023, with Pedersen closing in third place and Politt in fourth. A week after the third triumph in Flanders, Van der Poel, who also has six world titles in cyclo-cross, finished three minutes ahead of Philipsen and Pedersen, in an edition that did not feature one of his main rivals, the Belgian Wout van Aert, who missed the race as he recovers from injuries sustained in a fall. This is the sixth 'Monument' conquered by 'MVDP' in his career, the second in the current season, because in addition to the two triumphs in Paris-Roubaix, he also has three triumphs in the Tour of Flanders (2020, 2022, 2024) and one in Milan-Sanremo (2023). He also became the sixth rider to win Paris-Roubaix with the 'rainbow' jersey of world champion and the first to win the race twice in a row since Tom Boonen did so in 2008 and 2009. The Dutch cyclist, 29 years old, one of the main figures in the international peloton, thus continues to fill an already full curriculum, with 49 victories on the road as a professional, which will have in the Paris2024 Olympic Games another of the objectives of the season. The Portuguese António Morgado (UAE Emirates) finished in 87th position, more than 15 minutes behind the winner.
The next 'Monument' of world cycling will be held on April 23, in the case of Liège-Bastogne-Liège.
