Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has given an extensive interview to the latest edition of British magazine FourFourTwo, in which he discusses a variety of topics, including his time working with Cristiano Ronaldo at Manchester United.

The Portugal international famously returned to Old Trafford in the summer of 2021, joining from Juventus for a fee of less than €20 million. He had been linked with a move to Manchester City at the time, something Solskjaer admits helped force the Red Devils' hand.

"We didn't want him to go to Manchester City. We had four wins and a draw, and we were top of the league in September 2021. Raphael Varane and Jadon Sancho had come in, and then we took the next step and brought Cristiano in," he said.

"It felt like the right thing to do. It didn't work out as we wanted, but it was the right thing to do at the time. He was available, he was fit, he was hungry. He made his second debut against Newcastle, and it was one of the most electrifying days I've ever seen at Old Trafford.

"He scored two goals. He deserved the chance to come back. He scored 24 goals last season. He deserves more credit than he's got. He was still one of the top goalscorers in the world, he looked sharp," he added.
