The gathering began at 4:00 pm at the Jardim Manuel Bívar, with the parade going through several of the city's main streets for about 40 minutes, ending at the Largo Catarina Eufémia, with participants holding up posters and red carnations and chanting slogans.

"Freedom Forever", "April is More Future" and "Stop the War, Opportunity for Peace" could be read on some of the posters while slogans such as: "April 25th Forever, Fascism Never Again", "Yes to Peace, No to War" and "The United People Will Never Be Defeated" were chanted.

In the march for freedom, organized by the União dos Sindicatos do Algarve/CGTP-IN (USAL), several unions and regional leaders participated, aiming to mark the fiftieth anniversary of April 25th.

In statements to Lusa, the USAL coordinator, Catarina Marques, highlighted the importance of commemorating the date, "not only to affirm the values of April, which allowed access to housing, health, increased salaries and improved quality of life for all, but also to defend these achievements and all of this progress".

"Without defending these values conquered on April 25th, 1974 and enshrined in the Constitution in 1976, we will not achieve progress, development and improved living and working conditions for all", she stressed.

Catarina Marques added that, although several achievements have been made, "there is still much to be done", namely in the Algarve, "one of the poorest regions with the most social exclusion".

"The issues of salary and pension appreciation are extremely important so that people can have a dignified life, as is investment in the National Health Service, public schools and Social Security, which are achievements and values that we must continue to defend and affirm", she stressed.

The commemorations of the 50th anniversary of April 25th in the Algarve capital end with speeches by party and union leaders from the Algarve.
