The Republican National Guard (GNR) carried out an operation to combat illegal gambling and tax fraud, in which several searches were carried out in commercial establishments and residences in the districts of Faro, Beja, Lisbon and Setúbal. As part of this operation, "about 500 gaming machines were seized", reads a statement, where the GNR also reveals that "three people were named suspects". They are two men and a woman, aged between 52 and 64. "Two legal persons were also named suspects", "one for operating a restaurant and the other for distributing recreational products". The investigation began at the end of 2021, "targeting the criminal offenses of operating games of chance, fraud and breach of tax trust". "The military of the Guard carried out an operation that allowed them to determine the locations used as establishments for the illegal operation of gambling, as well as those that were used for the storage and distribution of the respective gaming machines", says the GNR in the information note, revealing that, from then on, "two house search warrants and twenty-three non-house search warrants were served", "including thirteen commercial establishments and warehouses, in vehicles and in a company, places that were used for the illegal practice of gambling, for storage and distribution of gaming machines". In all, 132 illegal gaming machines, 363 machines of related game modes, 1,109 posters associated with machines of related game modes and 874.50 euros in cash were seized.
