Hun Manet said in a Facebook post that he was "deeply shocked" when he received the news of the explosion at the base in Kampong Speu province.

It was not immediately clear what caused the blast, and Hun Manet did not say in his Facebook post.

The premier offered his condolences to the families of the soldiers and promised that the government would pay for their funerals and compensate both the dead and the injured.

Images from the scene showed a gutted building still smouldering and soldiers receiving treatment in a hospital.

Hun Manet, a graduate of the West Point Military Academy, was promoted to four-star general shortly before being named prime minister-designate to succeed his authoritarian father, Hun Sen.
