The earthquake occurred at 5:35 p.m. local time today (08:35 GMT) and had its epicenter 540 kilometers deep, off the coast of the Osagawara archipelago, south of the Japanese capital.

According to the JMA, despite the earthquake being felt "with force", no tsunami warning was activated, nor any damage has been reported so far.

The earthquake reached level 3 on the Japanese seismic scale (7 levels and focused on measuring surface agitation and potential damage) in this group of islands.

Japan is located in the so-called Ring of Fire, one of the most active seismic zones in the world, and suffers earthquakes with relative frequency. Its infrastructures are specially designed to withstand tremors.
