The two leaders discussed external security issues during a meeting where they watched the alliance’s drills in the Suwalki Gap, a 65-kilometre strip of land that separates the two countries from Moscow ally Belarus and the heavily militarised Russian exclave of Kaliningrad.

"The idea of deploying nuclear weapons is not aggressive or threatening to Russia, it is a deterrent," the Lithuanian president told reporters.

His Polish counterpart this week proposed that NATO deploy nuclear weapons on his country’s territory to counter Russian missiles stationed in Kaliningrad and Belarus, an idea that has not been backed by the country’s liberal government but has angered Moscow. Duda, however, reiterated the idea on Tuesday.

"The entire territory of NATO as we understand it should be defended in a proper and adequate way, so it is only natural that a nuclear component should be deployed on NATO’s eastern flank. As a country of this region, we are open to hosting such weapons," he said.

The two presidents spoke to reporters on the sidelines of the drills involving 1,500 NATO troops testing various defence scenarios in the Suwalki Gap, seen as a weak spot for the alliance in the region.
