A pocket watch found with the body of John Jacob Astor IV, the wealthiest man aboard the Titanic, is to be auctioned from Saturday.

Auctioneers Henry Aldridge & Son said bidding for the timepiece will start at £60,000, with an estimate of £150,000.

The item, which has the initials JJA engraved on it, is made of 14-carat gold and was recovered from the wreck days after it sank in April 1912.

It was found with the body of the 47-year-old, along with a diamond ring and gold and diamond cufflinks.

"Astor is well known as the wealthiest passenger aboard the R.M.S. Titanic and was considered one of the richest people in the world at the time, with an estimated net worth of $87 million (equivalent to several billion dollars today)," the auction house said.

According to British publications, Astor was travelling on the Titanic with his 18-year-old wife, whom he had recently married. The pair had been on a tour of Europe and North Africa following the controversy surrounding their marriage due to the age difference. They were returning to their home in the US when the ship went down.

The millionaire attempted to board a lifeboat with his wife, who survived the tragedy, but was told that women and children should be saved first.

The watch was restored after it was returned to the family and has been worn by family members.
