In a statement, the Finnish Air Force confirmed its participation in the NATO mission, in a joint effort with the United Kingdom, between June and August this year, marking the first time Helsinki is integrated into the Atlantic Alliance's air policing rotation, which it joined a year ago.

The Finnish detachment will consist of a maximum of eight fighters and 100 military personnel, with the team's elements expected to be rotated so that as many military personnel as possible gain practical experience of allied cooperation on a mission.

"By participating in the air mission for the first time, we are doing our part to strengthen NATO cohesion and improve interoperability with allies," commented the commander of the Finnish Air Force, General Juha-Pekka Keranen.

The mission aims to ensure the integrity of NATO's eastern airspace and prevent conflicts through defense and deterrence measures.

Its mission is to intercept and identify aircraft that do not comply with international flight regulations and that approach allied airspace.

Finland is the northern external border of the European Union (EU) and constitutes a significant part of NATO's northeastern flank.

The Nordic country is one of NATO's newest members, having joined in April 2023, after decades of non-alignment, following Russia's invasion of Ukraine on February 24, 2022.
