Joe Biden has agreed to debate Donald Trump in the run-up to the US presidential election in November. "At some point, I’m going to have to debate him," he said in response to a question from radio host Howard Stern on Friday.

The US president has broken his silence after months of pressure from television networks and the Trump campaign to get the two men to go head-to-head on the ‘big issues’ facing the country, the New York Times reports.

The incumbent’s campaign – and the man himself – had previously refused to commit to a face-off between the Democratic and Republican candidates.

It comes after five US television networks urged Democratic President Joe Biden and former President and presumptive Republican nominee Donald Trump to commit to televised debates.

CNN International reported on 10 March that NBC, CBS, ABC and Fox News sent a letter to Biden and Trump making the request, which the five networks hoped other news organisations would join.

The letter’s signatories urged Biden and Trump, who have not yet been nominated by their parties but have no declared rivals, to “publicly commit to participating in debates … prior to the November general election”.

"While it is premature to invite any candidates, it is not too early for candidates who expect to meet the eligibility criteria to publicly state their intention to participate in debates," the letter reads.

What have Biden and Trump said in the past?

In early March, Biden would not publicly commit to debating Trump, but he did not rule it out either, saying "It depends on whether he behaves himself," CNN International reported at the time.

Trump, meanwhile, has said on social media that he will debate “anytime, any place”, despite the Republican National Committee voting unanimously in 2022 to withdraw from the Commission on Presidential Debates, which organises the campaign debates.

In the 2020 election, when Biden and Trump were last vying for the White House, the commission took the extraordinary step of muting the microphones of both men during parts of the debates because of the Republican candidate’s repeated interruptions.
