The brother of Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez established his residence in Portugal at the end of last year. Before that, he bought a mansion in Elvas, in the district of Portalegre, from where he works remotely for the Spanish government. Now, the opposition accuses him of "political indecency" for allegedly evading taxes.

David Sánchez works for the Badajoz council, chaired by the PSOE, from Elvas, where he bought a mansion worth 240,000 euros. His duties include directing the Ópera Jovem music cabinet. However, the brother of the government official is reportedly paying taxes in Portugal and not in Spain, according to an investigation by the newspaper El Debate, which has generated controversy.

Now, the leaders of the political opposition are asking for clarifications on David Sánchez's tax obligations, reports the newspaper El Economista.

The spokesman for the People's Party of Spain (PP) in Extremadura asked for "political decency" from the president of the Badajoz council and the secretary general of the PSOE (Spanish Socialist Party) in Extremadura, Miguel Ángel Gallardo, to find out where Sánchez's brother's tax payments are made and why he was not required to file either the Income Tax or the Wealth Tax in 2021 and 2022.

In this sense, José Juliá considered it "inadmissible" and "immoral" that he does not pay taxes in Spain, when he "receives money from all the inhabitants of Badajoz".

"How is it possible that a manager of the Provincial Council of Badajoz, dependent on the socialist government, who earns more than 55,000 euros per year, declares that he does not have to file the Income Tax Return, as all Spaniards do?", he asked, recalling that all Spaniards with incomes exceeding 22,000 euros per year are required to file this document.

On the other hand, José Luis Quintana, PSOE delegate in Extremadura, defended David Sánchez, stating that his living and paying taxes in Portugal "is legal", because he is in a "country of the European Union".

It is worth remembering that this is yet another controversy surrounding the Spanish Prime Minister. On Wednesday, a "preliminary investigation" was opened by a Madrid court into the wife of Pedro Sánchez.

The judicial investigation into Pedro Sánchez's wife, Begoña Gómez, is the result of a complaint for alleged influence peddling filed by the association 'Clean Hands', linked to the Spanish far right.

The case led the leader of the Spanish government to state that he may leave office, promising a public statement about his future next Monday.
