According to Spanish newspaper ABC, the younger girl was arrested by police.
The two girls had reportedly been arguing over a boy, the paper added, and the victim suffered a leg wound and was bleeding heavily after being stabbed.
The incident happened shortly before 1.30pm (12.30pm UK time). A man who was passing by helped the victim, using a belt to put pressure on the stab wound.
Paramedics then took the teenager to Basurto hospital.
Officers from the Basque regional police force, the Ertzaintza, and local police attended the scene, where they found the victim lying on the ground in a pool of blood. The girl’s mother was visibly distressed.
According to local newspaper El Correo, the two girls had been involved in an altercation last week, also over a boy. The paper said other teenagers tried to separate the pair but were unable to do so before the stabbing.
