Authorities in the Japanese city of Fujikawaguchiko are to block the view of Mount Fuji at a popular photography spot. The move follows complaints from residents about the behavior of foreign tourists.

According to the Agence France-Presse (AFP) news agency, a 2.5-meter-high, 20-meter-long net will be erected to block the view. Construction is due to begin next week.

"It's unfortunate that we have to do this because of some tourists who don't follow the rules," a city official told AFP, explaining that tourists often leave litter and ignore traffic regulations.

Mount Fuji, Japan's highest mountain, can be seen from several locations in the city of Fujikawaguchiko. However, according to AFP, the beauty spot in question became popular because the volcano appears to rise behind a branch of the popular Japanese convenience store chain Lawson.

This juxtaposition "has spread on social media as a very Japanese spot, making it a popular location for photos," the official said.

The move comes as Japan experiences record numbers of foreign tourists. In March, the country welcomed more than three million visitors for the first time.
