Alham Albashir has been sentenced to seven consecutive life sentences after being found guilty of terrorism charges, Turkey’s state-run Anadolu Agency reported.

The November 13, 2022, explosion tore through Istiklal Avenue, a busy pedestrian street in Istanbul lined with shops and restaurants, killing six people, including two children, and wounding 99.

Albashir and a man identified as Bilal el-Hamaus were operatives for the intelligence wing of the Kurdish militia group YPG and its political affiliate, the PYD, according to an indictment prepared by Istanbul prosecutors in 2023.

Turkish authorities consider the YPG to be the Syrian offshoot of the Kurdistan Workers’ Party, or PKK, which has waged a decades-long insurgency against Turkey for greater autonomy in the country’s southeast.

Albashir and el-Hamaus received special training from the YPG and PYD and were dispatched to Turkey with explosives, the indictment said, according to the U.S.-based AP news agency.

They traveled to Istanbul with the help of a network established by the group, the indictment said.

El-Hamaus managed to flee the country.

The conflict between the PKK and Turkey has claimed tens of thousands of lives since the 1980s.

Turkey and its Western allies have designated the PKK as a terrorist organization.
