Embaló stresses "the original contribution" of Guinea to the April Revolution

The President of Guinea-Bissau, Umaro Sissoco Embaló, today expressed the "pride" of the Guinean people in having made "the original contribution" to the historical transformation that culminated in the April Revolution, decolonization, and democracy in the PALOP.

Sissoco Embaló recalled that 50 years ago, when the 25th of April occurred, the "Guinean people in struggle - led by the African Party for the Independence of Guinea and Cape Verde (PAIGC) of Amílcar Cabral - had already unilaterally proclaimed their own national independence, their own State" and this "relevant historical event" on September 24, 1973, was recognized "by a large majority" of the UN members.

"The evocation of the Portuguese Revolution of the 25th of April immediately calls for a joint reflection on the national liberation struggles of our peoples", said Embaló, stressing the occurrence of "two historical processes that intersected".

These two processes, he said, "had in common the same aspiration", freedom and national liberation, so it was not "surprising that a strategic convergence - between the fighters against the Empire and the fighters against the dictatorship - began to gain, little by little, greater density, greater strength".

Sissoco Embaló was speaking in Lisbon during the commemorative session of the 50th anniversary of the 25th of April 1974, which was attended by the Heads of State of the Portuguese-Speaking African Countries (PALOP) and Timor-Leste.

"The collective memory of our peoples holds an unshakeable certainty: the revolution of the 25th of April 1974 ended the war", he also stressed, recalling that it began in Angola, spread to Guinea and then to Mozambique.

"In fact, ending the war was the primary purpose that animated the Captains of April", and "it was, without a doubt, an unforgettable historical feat", he declared.

It was also on the 25th of April, he added, that "the way was opened for the implementation of the concept of decolonization enshrined in the Charter of the United Nations", recalling, however, that, despite the "success of April", "it was still necessary to overcome many resistances", illustrated by the fact that Portugal only officially proclaimed the principle of self-determination of its former colonies "on July 27, 1974 - three months after the revolution of the 25th of April".
