Search and rescue operations are underway in the affected areas, which include the provincial capital, Guangzhou, and the cities of Shaoguan, Heyuan, Zhaoqing, Qingyuan, Meizhou and Huizhou.
The downpours have displaced a total of 53,741 people, of whom 12,256 have had to be urgently resettled. The heavy rains have caused rivers in the region to swell, with 38 hydrological stations on 24 rivers in the province recording water levels above the warning level. Authorities have activated the level IV emergency response, the lowest on a four-tier scale, in the cities of Shaoguan and Qingyuan to deal with the flooding, and more than 200 sanitation workers have been deployed to clean up streets, drains and canals. The weather forecast for the coming week in Guangdong province, which borders Macau and Hong Kong, is for frequent rain. China has a four-tier colour-coded weather warning system, with red being the most severe, followed by orange, yellow and blue. Besides Guangdong, heavy rain and thunderstorms are expected in the southern Guangxi, southeastern Fujian and eastern Zhejiang provinces from Sunday night to Monday night. Local authorities have urged people to switch off electricity in risk areas and to suspend outdoor activities. Drainage measures have also been recommended in urban areas and farmland to prevent possible disasters such as mountain torrents, landslides and mudslides.
