"It is vital that the Palestinians act in unity in this process. The strongest response to Israel and the path to victory are through unity and integrity," Erdogan said, according to a statement from the Turkish presidency.
After the recent military tensions between Israel and Iran, Erdogan stressed that "what happened should not make Israel gain ground and that it is important to act in a way that keeps the focus on Gaza," the text reads, alluding to the war that has been going on for more than six months between Tel Aviv forces and Hamas in the Palestinian enclave. According to the press release, the head of state also assured that Turkey "would continue its humanitarian aid to Palestine, in order to relieve as much as possible the suffering" of the population of the Gaza Strip. Turkey, which is one of the main countries providing aid to the population of the Palestinian territory, has already sent 45,000 tons of food and medicine to the region. Erdogan also recalled that his country had taken "a series of sanctions against Israel, including trade restrictions", the latter since April 9. The Turkish President warned that "one day Israel will pay the price for the oppression it inflicts on the Palestinians" and recalled that his country, which does not recognize Hamas as a terrorist organization, "will continue to denounce the massacres [of Israel] in Gaza in all forums". Similarly, he assured that Turkey is making "every effort to establish the independent State of Palestine, which is essential to bring lasting peace to the region", two days after the United States vetoed in the Security Council a request for full integration into the United Nations. The meeting of more than two hours between Erdogan and the Palestinian leader takes place shortly after an alleged Israeli attack on Iran, in apparent retaliation for Tehran's offensive a week ago, which launched hundreds of 'drones' and missiles against Israeli soil, mostly intercepted. This military action was, in turn, a response to the bombing of Tehran's consular facilities in Damascus on April 1, which killed several people, including two senior officers of the Iranian Revolutionary Guard. The tension between Israel and Iran has increased significantly since the Israeli military offensive in the Gaza Strip, which followed the attack by the Palestinian group Hamas on Israeli soil on October 7, 2023. Iran supports Hamas, which is classified as a terrorist organization by Israel, the United States and the European Union, as well as other movements hostile to Tel Aviv, including the Lebanese Shiite group Hezbollah and the Houthis of Yemen.
