Unfortunately, some foods that appear to be healthy can actually have a significant impact on the scales. To help you avoid these, DailyMail quotes dietician Tayla Russel listing some popular examples that are surprisingly high in calories and could be contributing to weight gain.

First up is granola, a popular breakfast choice that "isn't as low-calorie as you might think". A single cup can set you back around 400-500 calories.

Nuts also make the list. "They're incredibly nutritious, but a cup can set you back around 600 calories," warns the dietician. She says they shouldn't be eliminated entirely as they do have redeeming qualities, but they should be eaten in moderation.

The expert also advises keeping a close eye on serving sizes when it comes to peanut butter. She says people often eat more than the recommended two tablespoons, which can add up to over 200 calories.

Also on the list is dried fruit. "Not only is it very calorie-dense, but it also tends to have a lot of added sugar," she explains. And unfortunately, pasta also makes the list, "not because it's bad, but because it's so easy to overeat".
