Many people don't know, or forget, but "fiber 'feeds' the good bacteria in your gut, which helps provide a range of health benefits, including controlling your immune system, blood sugar, brain function and weight", explains Michael Mosley, doctor and author of several books, quoted in the Mirror. 

So, ideally "people should aim for around 30 grams of fibre a day," he adds. Those who don't consume this nutrient daily start to report uncomfortable symptoms.

Signs that you are not consuming enough fiber: 

  • Constipation. Normally "fiber can help soften and bulk up stools"; 
  • Fatigue and low energy. "Fiber can help stabilize blood glucose levels, ensuring a slower release of sugars into the blood and helping you avoid those dreaded mid-afternoon energy slumps"; 
  • Feeling hungry soon after eating. Eating foods rich in fiber keeps you feeling fuller for longer;
  • Difficulty losing weight. It is possible that fiber helps reduce appetite between meals.
