Tourist demand in Portugal increased sevenfold between 1974 and 2022, according to data compiled and released by Pordata, on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of April 25th.
"Between 1974 and 2022, the number of overnight stays by tourists in Portugal grew from 9.4 million to almost 70 million", can be read in a publication by Pordata published on the social network X (formerly Twitter).
According to the data released, "the air transport sector experienced substantial growth over five decades", and "this boost is also due to the increased demand for tourism".
The country gained over 3,000 kilometres (km) of motorways since 1974, lost over 1,000 km of railway lines, and air transport and tourism increased substantially, according to Pordata's analysis.

In the work authored by Ricardo Garcia and Ana Serra, Pordata illustrates the changes that have taken place in the country, especially in terms of demographics, the profile of the general population and families in particular, modernisation in transport, access to health and education, the world of work and social protection, or the living conditions of the Portuguese.
