With a record number of entries, the works are divided into 1,207 books of poetry, 839 novels, 389 short story books, 158 chronicles and 34 plays, having been published by 401 publishers from six countries: Angola, Brazil, Cape Verde, Italy, Mozambique and Portugal.

"Writers from 15 nationalities are participating in the award: Angola, Argentina, Brazil, Cape Verde, Chile, Colombia, Spain, Guinea-Bissau, India, Italy, Mozambique, Palestine, Portugal, São Tomé and Príncipe and Uruguay. This number represents a 25% increase compared to last year in the number of nationalities competing for the award", highlights a statement released by the organization.

The curatorship of Oceanos in 2024 is formed by Matilde Santos, president of the Board of Directors of the National Library of Cape Verde, João Fenhane, director of the National Library of Mozambique, and by journalists Isabel Lucas, from Portugal, and Manuel da Costa Pinto, from Brazil. The Oceanos Award is coordinated by cultural manager Selma Caetano.

For the second consecutive year, the Oceanos Award entries are divided into two categories: prose (novel, short story, chronicle, also including plays) and poetry.

The award maintains the three stages of evaluation. In the first stage, the registered books are read and evaluated by an international jury composed of writers, poets, teachers and literary critics from Angola, Brazil, Mozambique and Portugal. After this evaluation, in August, the semi-finalists for poetry and prose will be announced.

In a second stage, the intermediate jury selects the finalists in the two categories, a list that will be announced in October.

Finally, in the third stage, the final jury elects the two winners - one for poetry and one for prose - in December.

The distinguished authors will receive a total monetary prize of 300 thousand reais (54.3 thousand euros at the current exchange rate), an amount divided into 150 thousand reais (27.3 thousand euros) for each of the winners.

Oceanos is carried out through the Culture Incentive Law of the Brazilian Ministry of Culture, and has the sponsorship of Banco Itaú and the Directorate-General for Books, Archives and Libraries of the Portuguese Republic, with the support of Itaú Cultural, the Ministry of Culture and Tourism of Mozambique, the Ministry of Culture and Creative Industries of Cape Verde and the institutional support of the Community of Portuguese Language Countries (CPLP).
