The Cinema and Audiovisual Institute (ICA) revealed today that 66 applications were accepted for this support program, with a budget of 790,000 euros, and the jury selected seven projects.
This support program is called "Cinema for Democracy" and was launched in October as part of the celebrations of the 50th anniversary of the April 25, 1974 Revolution, in a partnership between the ICA and the mission structure for that event. According to the list released by the ICA, the largest share of funding -- 250,000 euros each -- will go to the project for a first feature film by actress Joana Brandão and to a television series conceived by producer and director Luís Almeida. "Coragem Hoje, Abraços Amanhã", produced by real Ficção, will be a feature fiction film, which has the same basis as the monologue that Joana Brandão wrote, staged and performed ten years ago, based on research and interviews with women who were tortured by the PIDE, the political police of the Estado Novo, she told Lusa today. "It's about the struggle of those women. It's the concrete vision of those women, of their struggle. The title was one of the phrases that the prisoners used to say in a code of knocks when they communicated. (...) This is a very great emotion for me, especially because I can give a voice to these women. It will be a great honor for me," said Joana Brandão. The television series "Novas Narrativas de Caça", by Luís Almeida and Victor Lemos, consists of seven episodes with as many stories united by the same theme: "The search for identity and belonging of black Portuguese people, Afro-descendants, who struggle to be part of a society that often ignores and oppresses them," reads the project's official website. "Novas narrativas de caça" is an initiative by Many Takes and Galo Bravo and among the authors associated with each episode are Luís Almeida, Cláudia Semedo, Gisela Casimiro and Diogo Carvalho. The financial support program "Cinema for Democracy" will also support three documentary projects for cinema and audiovisual: "A palavra contra o silêncio", submitted by Continue Walking, with 100,000 euros, "Celeste dos Cravos", by MGN, with 90,000 euros, and "Querido Mário", by Sopro Filmes, with 73,000 euros. The film exhibition "25 de abril em curtas", promoted by the Vilacondense producer Curtas Metragens CRL, with 7,000 euros, and the initiative "Ontem e Hoje: As imagens de Abril", by Casa da Esquina, Coimbra, with 20,000 euros, are the two other projects chosen. The aim of this support program is to encourage the creation of films, series, television films, training actions, seminars and film cycles "that appeal to the commemoration of the 50th anniversary of the April 25 Revolution and to the reflection on its relevance in the construction of the current democracy". The allocation of the 790,000 euros is scheduled to take place between 2024 and 2027. Read Also: Serralves exhibits "a cry for freedom that must be continuous" (Portuguese version)
