Nasa administrator Bill Nelson believes that China’s space programme has been created with the sole purpose of developing military capabilities, The Guardian reports.
“China has made extraordinary progress, particularly over the last 10 years, but they are very, very secretive”, Nasa administrator Bill Nelson told US lawmakers during a hearing on Nasa’s 2025 budget.
“We believe much of what China is doing in the civil space programme is actually military”, Nelson added, suggesting that the US and China are now in a “space race”.
The Nasa administrator went on to explain that while he does not believe the US is in danger of losing its lead in space, he recognises that China has been investing “enormous amounts of money” in its space programme. “I think it’s best that we not take our eye off the ball”, he warned.
