Zuckerberg admits he was caught off guard by generative AI
However, Meta's leader says the company was prepared.

Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg admitted in an interview on Dwarkesh Patel’s podcast that he was caught off guard by the popularity of generative AI, though he noted that the company had been preparing for the need to train large language models.
As reported by Business Insider , Zuckerberg recalled that when Meta began acquiring GPUs to train its AI in 2022, the goal was to train the Reels video recommendation algorithm to compete with TikTok.
“I basically looked at it and said, ‘Hey, we need to make sure that we’re never in this position again. So let’s just order enough GPUs to do what we need to do for Reels, but let’s double it,’” Zuckerberg said. “Because our view was that there was going to be something else down the road that we don’t see yet.”
The Meta chief noted that the decision to order more GPUs than were immediately needed has been “in retrospect, a good decision.”
