PCP proposes end of tolls on a dozen motorways

The PCP proposed today the elimination of tolls on a dozen former SCUT motorways, considering that, in the defense of the public interest, the end of these fees for users should not imply any compensation to the concessionaires.

The communists' goal is that this bill, which the Lusa agency had access to today, be dragged into the parliamentary debate on Thursday scheduled by the PS about its bill to eliminate toll rates on sections and subsections of the Interior highways (ex-SCUT) or where there are no alternative routes that allow for use in quality and safety.

In the initiative, the PCP states that the "introduction of toll rates on the old SCUT highways constituted a harsh blow to the economic fabric of the affected regions", and it is possible to "conclude that in this process only the concessionaires came out ahead" while "the State, the populations and the regional economy lost and continue to lose".

"The PCP, from the very beginning, has always opposed the collection of tolls that were imposed and maintained by the PSD/CDS and PS governments and has stood on the side of the populations that from the very beginning demonstrated against this unjust decision", recalls the party in the statement of reasons.

According to the communists, "the reductions that have already been achieved in the value of the tolls are inseparable from the struggle of the populations and the action of the PCP", emphasizing that for the party these routes are fundamental for regional development and should not have tolls "for not having a viable alternative and due to the imperative of social justice".

The PCP wants the toll rates to be eliminated for users of all sections and subsections of the A4 (Autoestrada Transmontana, between Matosinhos and Águas Santas, and east of Amarante), A13 (Autoestrada do Pinhal Interior, between Atalaia and Ferreira do Zêzere), A22 (Via do Infante), A23 (Autoestrada da Beira Interior), A24 (Autoestrada do Interior Norte), A25 (Autoestrada das Beiras Litoral e Alta), A28 (Autoestrada do Norte Litoral, between Angeiras and Darque) A29 (Autoestrada da Costa de Prata), A41 (Circular Regional Exterior do Porto) and A42 (Autoestrada do Grande Porto).

The PCP also proposes that with the end of tolls on these routes, and "in defense of the public interest", no "compensation is due to the entity that holds the concession".

The communists want the executive to adopt, during this year, "the necessary steps to revert the highway concessions referring" to these highways on which it wants to eliminate tolls, and Infraestruturas de Portugal should be the managing entity of the sections and subsections.
