The parliamentary leader of the Left Bloc, Fabian Figueiredo, reacted this Friday to the 'summons' left by the president of the Assembly of the Republic, José Pedro Aguiar-Branco, who today said that the Attorney General of the Republic, Lucília Gago, should make statements in Parliament.

"Let us recall that a statement from the Attorney General of the Republic led to the resignation of the Government and the dissolution of the Assembly of the Republic. We have witnessed the development of Operation Influencer and its weaknesses. This has led to growing concern in various sectors of Portuguese society, from the Left to the Right, in academia, and in the judicial system. All voices have asked for more clarification", began the Left Bloc member, greeting the president of the Assembly of the Republic for having "joined this appeal" that asks Lucília Gago to be "clear and transparent" - and to give justifications "above all" about Influencer.

In statements in Parliament, the parliamentary leader also said that the Left Bloc "has demanded" since the controversy arose that the Attorney General of the Republic provide explanations within the scope of this case.

"In 50 years of Democracy, Portugal has never witnessed a similar episode", he considered, reinforcing that it was the statement from the Attorney General's Office, "evasive", that led to the resignation of the previous government.

Fabian Figueiredo stated that Lucília Gago should "take good note" of these statements from the president of the Assembly, and make herself available to go to Parliament to provide clarification.

Asked whether the Left Bloc would take any action to bring Lucília Gago to Parliament, Fabian Figueiredo explained that the party wanted to believe that the Attorney General of the Republic understands that her presence is "fundamental for the confidence of citizens in the Democratic Rule of Law and independence of the Public Prosecutor's Office".

The Left Bloc member also stressed that "there are various sectors of Portuguese society" that want clarification, since, 'when all is said and done', this case has been "crumbling every time it is scrutinised by judges", something that in his view "raises legitimate concerns".

The journalists insisted on whether the Left Bloc would take steps to call the Attorney General's Office to the 1st Commission, and Fabian Figueiredo reinforced that he wanted to believe that she would come. "If you ask me whether the Attorney General's Office will remain closed in its dungeons, continue to be evasive, and think that in the 21st century it is possible to administer justice as it has done, the Left Bloc will seek a broader field to ensure that the Attorney General comes to the Assembly of the Republic", he admitted.

The desire to bring Lucília Gago to the Assembly of the Republic was demonstrated this Friday in an interview with Antena 1 by the president of the Assembly of the Republic, José Pedro Aguiar-Branco, who said that Lucília Gago should speak so as not to create a climate of suspicion.

"None of us want to believe that there is premeditated conduct to provoke a certain political fact on the Left or Right through a criminal investigation, but the truth is that no one lives alone in the world and it needs to be explained, because if it is explained and if the situation when explained makes it clear that the suspicion does not exist, I think that we are contributing so that these two worlds coexist in a healthier way for democracy", he explained.
