Livre MP Jorge Pinto reacted, this Friday, to the statements made by the president of the Assembly of the Republic, José Aguiar-Branco, who said that the Attorney General of the Republic (PGR), Lucília Gago, should provide explanations about the processes that caused political crises.

"We are well aware of the importance of the separation of powers and that is why we need to better understand the scope of this desire that the President of the Assembly of the Republic has to summon Lucília Gago to Parliament. We will propose that this be discussed in the leaders' assembly so that we can understand what the scope is and thus have a final opinion on the validity of this summons", he said, in statements to journalists.

The Livre MP defended that explanations were needed not only to the MPs, but also to the Portuguese people, and spoke not only about the case of the Republic, but also about that of Madeira.

Asked whether the party would agree to summon the PGR to the Assembly, Livre considered that the best way for these explanations to be given would be through consensus at a leaders' conference. "Although not unprecedented, it is rare to summon an Attorney General to Parliament, and therefore we do not want to make this a current practice. But we do not oppose this desire. We need to better understand the scope and discuss it. This summons cannot be made by exclusive and sole will", said Jorge Pinto.

The MP acknowledged, however, that Livre agrees that there is a climate of suspicion.

The desire to bring Lucília Gago to the Assembly of the Republic was demonstrated this Friday in an interview with Antena 1 by the president of the Assembly of the Republic José Pedro Aguiar-Branco, who said that Lucília Gago should speak so that a climate of suspicion is not created.

"None of us wants to believe that there is a premeditated conduct to provoke a certain political fact on the Left or on the Right through a criminal investigation, but the truth is that no one lives alone in the world and it needs to be explained, because if it is explained and if the situation, when explained, makes it clear that there is no suspicion, I think we are contributing to these two worlds coexisting in a healthier way for democracy", he explained.
