Alexandra Leitão spoke to journalists in parliament after the IRS proposals were voted on, explaining that the socialists' goal is for the debate in the specialty to be "as broad as possible", then assessing "what the final result" of the committee process will be.
"It was in this democratic spirit, of dialogue, of allowing debate and discussion in the specialty, that we made the projects that were voted on viable and the projects that were requested to be voted down without a vote were voted down without a vote," she justified. Refusing the idea of any lack of dialogue on the part of the PS, the socialist parliamentary leader left a warning for the specialty. "For the PS, any tax reduction must be socially just, must maintain the progressiveness of taxes and cannot be regressive. What we have seen in the government's project is that it has these three characteristics: it is regressive, it lowers taxes more for the 10% of people who have the highest incomes and therefore this will never have our agreement in the specialty," she warned. The socialists' conviction is that their bill "is better, it is fairer" and it will be by its content that the PS will "fight in the specialty". "We will have the broadest possible debate in the specialty, but there is one thing we will not give in on: the tax system must be progressive, it must be socially just and it must have equity. When there is an unequal tax reduction that benefits 10% of families with the highest incomes, these principles of progressiveness and equity are not being met," she insisted. According to Alexandra Leitão, the PS will not make viable "anything that compromises these principles". The PSD's parliamentary leader today accused the PS of "absolute irresponsibility" in the debate on the IRS and pointed out an alliance between Chega and the socialists, calling for responsibility in the discussion in the specialty. Parliament today approved in general terms the proposals of the PS, BE and PCP on the IRS and the requests for the government's proposal, Chega's and IL's to be voted down in the specialty without a vote.
