The Public Security Police (PSP) arrested a 33-year-old man and a 42-year-old woman on suspicion of pickpocketing. In a statement, the PSP explained that the incident occurred around 11:40 am on Tuesday in Rua da Trindade, Porto. The PSP officers "verified" that the duo, already referenced by that same authority for the practice of crimes against property, "namely pickpocketing", through "cunning", stole the wallet of a 74-year-old tourist, "and were immediately intercepted". The victim, according to the PSP, had not noticed that the duo had stolen her wallet. At the end of the operation, the police seized the wallet, "containing identification, bank and monetary documents", and returned it to the elderly woman. The detainees will be presented to the Judicial Authorities this Wednesday. In the same missive, the PSP admits that "it has verified that citizens often do not take the necessary precautions to avoid/hinder the practice of these criminal actions". Therefore, the authority advises citizens to "take measures to safeguard their belongings, namely always carry the wallet inside their coat or in the front pockets of their pants and never inside a backpack". They should also "be aware that incidents (disguised or not) may be created with the intention of distracting them" and should not forget "that pickpocketing can happen to anyone, so we must make life as difficult as possible for them". Finally, the person should not "be distracted, always paying attention to what is happening around them", concludes the PSP.
