Man detained for arson that caused forest fire in Fundão
A 37-year-old man was arrested today in the municipality of Fundão on suspicion of having caused a forest fire following a burn that got out of control.

"In the scope of police inquiries, it was possible to verify that the suspect was carrying out a burning of leftovers in agricultural property, which got out of control, causing a fire that consumed the surrounding vegetation", informed the GNR, in a statement sent to the Lusa agency.
The operation was carried out by the military of the Penamacor post, the man was constituted as an accused and the facts were communicated to the Fundão Judicial Court, in the district of Castelo Branco.
The GNR stressed that burns and slash-and-burn are the main causes of fires in Portugal, that their execution is forbidden whenever there is a very high or maximum level of rural fire danger, and is dependent on authorization or prior communication in other periods.
In addition to the person always having to be accompanied and carrying a mobile phone, the authorities stressed that the SOS Environment and Territory Line should be used, through the number 808 200 520, to report offenses or clarify doubts.
