Non-police staff of PSP threaten strike without meeting with minister

The union representing non-police workers of the Public Security Police (PSP) today threatened to go on strike if it is not received by the Minister of Internal Administration, also demanding that they be given the same supplement as the specialists of the Judicial Police (PJ).

In statements to Lusa, the president of the PSP's Union of Technical Support Staff for Police Activity (SPTAAP-PSP), José Dias, said that these professionals -- including lawyers, economists, psychologists, accountants and administrative assistants -- do not have the same benefits as police officers and complained about the silence of the Ministry of Internal Administration (MAI), now under the supervision of Margarida Blasco, regarding a request for a meeting that has already been submitted.

"We are the only union in the police with the right to strike. We are a group that the police need. That is why police officers are performing this service when they should not be. We are going to demand the same thing that is demanded for police officers, because we also run some risk", said the union leader, who gave a deadline of 30 April for a response from the MAI.

According to José Dias, there are "30 to 40% of police officers" who are also allocated to these areas and with "functions that are not in line" with their operational function.

The president of SPTAAP-PSP set the bar for demands at the same level as the supplement given to PJ specialists, which is around 600 euros, also recalling that these professionals have another supplement that has been frozen since 2008.

"We work here with the same risk, with the same hardship. We work the same as the 40% of police officers who are in non-aligned functions. If they do not grant us an audience or listen to us, we will proceed with a strike notice for May", he stressed, regretting that his union is the only one in the sphere of the Public Security Police (PSP) that has not yet been received.

The SPTAAP-PSP represents around a thousand professionals and is the only one that, because it is covered by the general statute of the Public Administration, has the right to strike.
