In a reaction released on the X network, the head of Portuguese diplomacy stated that "Portugal welcomes the approval, by the United States Congress, of a $61 billion [€57 billion] aid package to Ukraine", adding: "Together with the European Union, we support Ukraine in the defense of our common democratic values and principles".

This military and economic assistance, which is the result of months of tense negotiations, ended up receiving support from the two parliamentary benches in the lower house of Congress and must now be approved in the Senate, with a Democratic majority, where a first vote could take place as early as Tuesday.

The aid package to Ukraine was the most significant of a set of three laws voted on in a rare Saturday session, which included support for Israel and Taiwan, for a total of $95 billion (€89 billion).

The House of Representatives approved the Ukrainian aid bill with 311 votes in favor and 112 against.

After the result was known, congressmen celebrated and waved Ukrainian national flags.

After several months of blockade, the House of Representatives finally adopted the large aid plan for Ukraine, but on the battlefield this delay will have cost Kyiv several military setbacks against the Russian army.

In recent months, Ukraine has suffered intense bombing campaigns by Moscow's forces against its main cities and energy infrastructure, causing civilian casualties.

For several months, Kyiv authorities have been demanding more weapons and ammunition to contain Russia's air raids and the advances of its military on the combat fronts in the east of the country.

Ukraine's main military ally, the United States, has not adopted a large package for Kyiv for almost a year and a half, due to the blockade by the radical wing of the Republicans in Congress.
