In statements to Lusa after the meeting of the FNAM national council, in Coimbra, Joana Bordalo e Sá stressed that the union's main interest is "to have more doctors in the National Health Service" (SNS).

The FNAM leader ensured that they were "reviewing the proposals" that were on the table in the negotiations with the previous PS executive, regretting that it had not been "able to incorporate them and reach a reasonable agreement".

"The proposal that we adapted to the current moment was to renegotiate the medical career and the salary table. The issue of valuing salary scales, in order to restore purchasing power, is something we will continue to fight for", she said.

Joana Bordalo e Sá also demanded the reinstatement of the 35-hour week for doctors and defended greater progression in their professional careers, "both in competitions -- which should be quick and implemented -- as well as in progression by levels".

Finally, she listed the issue of intern doctors as another priority, recalling their high representation among SNS professionals, but whose time does not yet count towards their career. "They must be integrated into the medical career, that is something we will not give up", she stressed.

Asked about the salary increase proposal that they presented to the previous Socialist Government and which was around 30%, Joana Bordalo e Sá avoided setting percentages and stressed that "it was never just a salary issue", but admitted understanding that it was "necessary to restore the purchasing power" of these professionals.

Regarding the meeting on Friday with the new Minister of Health, Ana Paula Martins, the president of FNAM guaranteed that she was "in good faith" to "start a negotiation process" and expressed the wish that there would be no "negotiations or shady plays" throughout this process.

The FNAM meeting with the Ministry of Health is scheduled for April 26, at 11:00 am.
