The state channel, very close to the Egyptian intelligence services, stated that "significant progress was made in the meeting in the points of view of the Egyptian and Israeli delegations on a truce in the Gaza Strip," but did not provide further details.

Sources close to the meetings confirmed to EFE that the negotiations were fruitful and that many obstacles that prevented a truce agreement were overcome, although the Cairo delegation warned of the risks of an Israeli invasion in Rafah, in the extreme south of the Palestinian enclave, where about 1.4 million displaced people remain.

The same sources added that the authorities in Tel Aviv would be willing to suspend military operations in the Gaza Strip for about six weeks and allow the return of displaced people to the north of the territory, while giving initial approval for an exchange of hostages held by the Islamist group Hamas for Palestinian prisoners in Israeli jails.

After the meeting, the Egyptian delegation will forward the results to Hamas to evaluate and respond to the proposal, according to the sources.

According to the Israeli newspaper Walla, the government of Tel Aviv expressed to the Egyptian delegation its willingness to make a last attempt to negotiate with Hamas to obtain a temporary truce before launching a ground invasion in Rafah, which borders the north of the Sinai Peninsula.

The newspaper indicated that Israel wants to recover 33 people kidnapped for humanitarian reasons and added that the ceasefire will depend on the number of Israelis released.

Similarly, Israel told the Egyptian delegation that preparations for the operation in Rafah are serious and that it will not allow Hamas delays.

After the attack in Israel on October 7, which triggered the current conflict in the Gaza Strip, Hamas is holding 133 people hostage, of which it is believed that about half may be dead.

These developments come at a time when negotiations on a ceasefire - mediated by Egypt, Qatar and the United States - are at a standstill, with the Cairo government trying to prevent the ground invasion of Rafah.
