A South Korean woman was scammed out of nearly $50,000 by a person pretending to be Elon Musk, who convinced her to wire the money to an account.
According to international publications, the scheme began last year. "On July 17, Musk added me on Instagram. Although I became a big fan, I was doubtful at first," the woman, identified as Jeong Ji-sun, told South Korean broadcaster KBS.
But the victim said her doubts were dispelled when the person behind the screen began sharing photos with her and talking about their children. The shared images included what appeared to be Musk's identification.
The person even used artificial intelligence to trick the woman, making a video call with her using deepfake technology to appear to be Musk — and sound like him too. The scammer even told her he "loved her" during the video call they had.
He then convinced her to wire nearly $50,000 to an account that he said belonged to one of his employees, promising that he would invest the money for her. "I am happy when my fans get richer because of me," he allegedly told her.
It's not the first time someone has impersonated Musk, with a doppelgänger of his, identified as Yilong Ma, posting videos on TikTok about two years ago. The Tesla CEO even addressed the issue, questioning whether the person was real, saying "I'd like to meet this guy (if he is real)."
I’d like to meet this guy (if he is real). Hard to tell with deepfakes these days.
