Hidden among the glaciers of Antarctica, the fiery Mount Erebus is the southernmost active volcano on Earth, providing a bit of warmth amidst an icy landscape.

Antarctica has 138 volcanoes, according to a 2017 study cited by United Press International, but only about nine are currently active.

Standing at 12,448 feet (3,794 meters) tall, however, Mount Erebus is the best known and, along with two other volcanoes, makes up Ross Island. It is said to have been erupting when it was discovered in 1841 during Captain James Clark Ross’s voyage.

The volcano regularly spews clouds of gas and steam and is known to eject chunks of molten rock, known as “volcanic bombs.” It is the gas blasts that spray tiny gold crystals—scientists estimate that the volcano coughs up about 80 grams of gold each day—worth about $6,000 (5,500 euros).

Gold has been found hundreds of miles from Mount Erebus, with researchers finding traces of the precious metal in the air as far as 560 miles (900 kilometers) from the volcano.
