A 6-year-old boy died trying to shield his 3-year-old brother from a house fire in Virginia, and both of their "big hearts" were donated after they died.
The story was shared with People magazine by Jamey Brice, the father of William, 6, and Zachariah, 3. The outlet reports that the fire broke out on April 10 while the boys were home with their grandparents and their older brother, Logan, 8.
Logan and the grandparents were able to escape the home safely, but the younger boys were found together, with the older brother trying to protect the younger one. They were pronounced dead four days later, still side by side.
"They told us that when William and Zach were found, William was covering Zachariah and shielding him like a shield," the boys' father said. "We knew that was just his character because that's just who he is. He's a little hero."
Jamey said his younger sons had a "special bond." "Zachariah followed William everywhere, and William was so proud of it. He would tell everybody, 'That's my little brother,' " he said.
The two brothers were unresponsive for about 45 minutes after they were found by firefighters. Four days later, they were declared brain-dead due to smoke inhalation.
"It was very gut-wrenching because we could still see a heartbeat. In the end, when they did the tests, there was no response and they couldn't do anything on their own," their father added.
According to local WUSA9, the boys' organs will save up to nine lives. "We hope their hearts live on and that the recipients can have those big hearts," James Brice said.
