Biden backs free speech on campuses against Gaza war
US President Joe Biden "supports freedom of speech, debate, and non-discrimination" on college campuses, a White House spokesperson said Monday, amid protests on US campuses over the war in Gaza.

Universities have become a flash point in the U.S. debate over Israel’s war in Gaza, with a nationwide movement demanding an end to the conflict and, more broadly, to the Israeli occupation of Palestinian territories.
“The president believes that freedom of speech, debate and non-discrimination on college campuses are important. We think it’s important for people to be able to voice their concerns, but when it comes to hate speech and violence, we have to call that out,” White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre told reporters.
Tensions have been running high at several U.S. universities, particularly in New York and more broadly along the U.S. East Coast, after campus police detained student protesters at the behest of administrators.
The students are denouncing the U.S.’s strong military and diplomatic support for Israel.
Up for reelection in November against Donald Trump, the Democratic president is himself torn between backing Israel and not alienating left-leaning voters, particularly young people.
Earlier Tuesday, Biden signed into law a massive spending bill that included billions of dollars for what it called “urgent humanitarian assistance” for Gaza.
The Gaza war was triggered by an unprecedented barrage of rockets fired at Israel by Hamas on May 7, killing 12 Israelis, according to an AFP tally based on official Israeli figures.
Israel’s subsequent military onslaught has caused a humanitarian catastrophe in the densely populated territory, with more than 250 Palestinians killed, according to the Hamas-run health ministry.
