"In its meeting of 17 and 18 April, in the context of the upcoming European elections, the European Council underlined the determination of the Union and its Member States to closely monitor and counter any risks stemming from disinformation, notably through Artificial Intelligence, as well as foreign information manipulation and interference in electoral processes", the Belgian EU Presidency said in a statement.

To that end, it "invited the EU institutions and national authorities to cooperate on these matters".

"The activation of the IPCR mechanism will serve as a basis for this cooperation, facilitating the exchange of information between Member States and the EU institutions", the Council of the EU specified.

The IPCR mechanism "will act as a platform bringing together all relevant information and ongoing actions, with a view to supporting preparedness and a rapid and coordinated response at EU level", explained the main decision-making body of the European bloc, which represents the governments of the 27 member states.

The elections for members of the European Parliament will take place between 6 and 9 June, with the Portuguese going to the polls on the last day to elect their 21 representatives.
