The person arrested in connection with a stabbing at a school in Carmarthenshire, Wales, is a teenage girl.

It had been reported in the media that the suspect was a pupil at the school and Dyfed-Powys Police have now confirmed this, saying she remains in custody.

"We are working with the school and other agencies to ensure that all those affected are given the support they need," a spokesperson for the force said, as reported by the BBC.

The force also said, as reported in the UK media, that the three people injured were two members of staff and a pupil. All three were taken to hospital.

The incident happened on Wednesday morning and the school went into lockdown, with pupils later being allowed to leave. Many parents were waiting at the school gates, anxious to see their children. One mother told the BBC she was "relieved" to be with her daughter, adding that such violence was "unheard of" in the area. The lockdown lasted for around four hours.

UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak said he was "deeply shocked" by the incident. "My thoughts are with those affected and I thank the emergency services for their swift response," he wrote in a post on the social media platform X (formerly Twitter).

While the school was still in lockdown, the force said it was aware that images were being shared on social media and asked for them to be removed so as not to cause further distress to those affected.
