"In today's Cabinet meeting, we approved an amount of two billion dirhams (about 508.5 million euros) to repair the damage caused to the homes (...) of citizens," Mohammed bin Rashid al-Maktoum said on the social network X.

The country's prime minister, who is also vice-president, also said he had "learned lessons" from the storm that paralysed much of the country last week.

At least one person died as a result of the floods caused by the heaviest torrential rains recorded in the United Arab Emirates in the last 75 years, which damaged public and private infrastructure, official sources revealed.

The police in the southern emirate of Ras al Khaimah announced in a statement the death of a septuagenarian whose vehicle was swept away while crossing a valley in this desert region of the country, particularly affected by the floods that occurred on 16 April.

According to the official Emirates News Agency (WAM), this was the heaviest rainfall in the country in the last 75 years, breaking all records since the Emirates began collecting rainfall data in 1949.

According to the National Centre of Meteorology (NCM), the flood is "an exceptional event in the country's climate history".

The peak was recorded in the emirate of Al Ain, where rainfall reached 254 mm in less than 24 hours.
