In a statement, the conservatives said that the decision not to present a lead candidate ('spitzenkandidat') for the position currently held by Ursula von der Leyen was taken unanimously by the group's leadership, chaired by Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni.

The decision not to put forward a lead candidate for the leadership of the EU executive is due, in particular, to the fact that the system was bypassed in 2019 with the choice of Ursula von der Leyen, who was not in the running.

The ECR also states that it has never been in favour of the 'spitzenkandidat' system, which it considers a federalist tendency, arguing that the choice of the President of the Commission should remain a prerogative of the European Council.

The ECR's programme, in addition to proclaiming the sovereignty of states, advocates priorities such as investment in strengthening the European Union's (EU) defence industry, cooperation with NATO and investment in technology and security.

With regard to the environmental targets set out in the Green Deal, the group advocates a shift towards "a more balanced and localised climate strategy" that gives priority to the concerns "of farmers, fishermen, citizens and businesses".

"Spitzenkandidat" is the German term which, in the EU context, refers to the lead candidate (the top of the list) of a European political party for President of the European Commission.

The elections for Members of the European Parliament will take place between 06 and 09 June, the latter being the day on which the Portuguese will choose their 21 representatives at the polls.
