"For now, there are no blank checks. We assumed that we were part of the coalition [that elected von der Leyen as President of the European Commission], since in 2019 we supported her in exchange for greater commitments on political priorities", said Valérie Hayer, who is also the lead candidate 'Spitzenkandidat' for the leadership of the Renew community executive, in an interview with Lusa and other European agencies within the scope of the European Newsroom project.

Emphasising that, for now, she is in an electoral campaign, Hayer, who is also the leader of Renew in the EP, states that the goal is to obtain "the best possible electoral result".

"We will then see who is the candidate for the presidency of the European Commission and, whoever the person is, what will count for us are the priorities in terms of strategic autonomy, defence of competitiveness and our European democratic values".

Asked whether the liberals want to keep the position of President of the European Council, currently held by former Belgian Prime Minister Charles Michel, in their political family, Valérie Hayer, a MEP elected for France, states that this issue belongs "to the day after the elections".

"Spitzenkandidat" is the German term for lead candidate and, in the EU context, refers to the lead candidate (the head of the list) of a European political party for President of the European Commission.

The elections for members of the European Parliament will take place between 6 and 9 June, with the latter being the day on which the Portuguese people will choose their 21 representatives at the polls.
