"An attempted stabbing attack against soldiers was thwarted recently and (the troops) responded with gunfire. No injuries were reported," the Israeli military said in a brief statement, adding that no soldiers were hurt.

The official Palestinian news agency Wafa identified the alleged assailant as Maimuna Abdel Hamid Harasha, 20.

According to Wafa, which cited sources at the Palestinian health ministry, the soldiers shot the woman in the head and prevented paramedics from reaching her.

On Tuesday, a 44-year-old man -- identified as Shadi Aisha Yalaita -- was shot dead by soldiers during a security operation in Jericho, also in the occupied West Bank.

Medics also treated a child who was critically wounded after being shot in the abdomen.

The Israeli military has stepped up its raids in the occupied West Bank since a wave of violence erupted in October 2015, sparked by a surge in tensions over the flashpoint Al-Aqsa mosque compound in Israeli-annexed east Jerusalem.

Since then, around 484 Palestinians have been killed in violence in the Israeli-occupied West Bank, mainly by Israeli forces but also by Israeli settlers.

In the Gaza Strip, more than 34,000 people have been killed since the start of the war between Israel and Hamas in 2014, according to the health ministry in Gaza, which is run by the Islamist movement.
