"Timor-Leste echoes the call of ASEAN [Association of Southeast Asian Nations] for an immediate cessation of violence, respect for international humanitarian law and protection of all civilians, including foreign nationals and nationals of Member States" of the organization, states, in a press release, the Timorese Government.
The Government, led by Xanana Gusmão, also states that it supports "urgent measures to mitigate the impact of the conflict on civilians" and underlines the "importance of creating a safe environment for the provision of humanitarian assistance without discrimination".
The civil conflict, triggered by the 2021 coup d'état against the government of Nobel Peace Prize laureate Aung San Suu Kyi, has intensified in recent months following a series of attacks by ethnic minority groups in various regions of Myanmar.
The junta has suffered several major setbacks near the Chinese and Thai borders, leaving it in a position of weakness never seen since the coup, according to observers.
The capture of Myawaddy (southeast) by the Karen National Union forces, announced on 11 May, led the Thai authorities to increase the level of military presence on the border.
Since October 2021, Myanmar has been excluded from ASEAN summits and ministerial meetings, but in January a Naypyidaw official participated "in a retreat" of Foreign Ministers in Laos, which holds the annual rotating presidency.
The five-point peace plan proposed by ASEAN since 2021 remains at an impasse, despite visits by emissaries to Myanmar.
