A Russian court on Tuesday rejected the latest in a series of appeals by American journalist Evan Gershkovich against his pre-trial detention on espionage charges.

"The first appeal court ruled to leave unchanged the decision of March 26 (by the lower court) to extend the preventive measure (of detention)," Judge Alexander Pushkin said, according to AFP.

The Wall Street Journal reporter appeared in court smiling and gave a thumbs-up to press colleagues (see photo gallery above). The US daily reported that Gershkovich replied "all right" when the judge asked him if he understood the court's decision.

No trial date has yet been set. Last month his pre-trial detention was extended by three months, until June 30.

In a statement, the Wall Street Journal said it was "outrageous" that the reporter had been "wrongfully detained by the Russian government" for more than a year.

"Evan should have been released long ago, and we urge the (Biden) administration to do everything in its power to secure his freedom," it added.

Gershkovich, who was detained in March 2023, denies the "espionage" charges, as do the United States, his employer, his entourage and his family.

The journalist was arrested by the FSB -- the Russian secret services, heirs to the Soviet KGB -- while on a reporting trip to Yekaterinburg in the Urals, and faces up to 20 years in prison.

Russia has never publicly presented any evidence or detailed the accusations against him. The entire case has been classified as secret.

Gershkovich is being held in Moscow's Lefortovo prison, known for its harsh conditions.

Several US citizens have been detained and sentenced to heavy prison terms in Russia in recent years, with Washington -- which has backed Ukraine against the Russian invasion for the past two years -- accusing Moscow of taking them hostage in order to exchange them.

Gershkovich is the first American reporter to be imprisoned on espionage charges in Russia since September 1986, when Nicholas Daniloff, Moscow correspondent for U.S. News and World Report, was arrested by the Russian security services.

Daniloff was released without charge 20 days later, in exchange for a Soviet UN mission employee who had been arrested by the FBI, also on espionage charges.
